AHA provides recommendations to Consumer Product Safety Commission on modernized product injury surveillance system

The AHA today provided comments to the Consumer Product Safety Commission on its agenda and priorities for fiscal years 2027 and 2028, specifically focusing on recommendations for National Electronic Injury Surveillance System modernization efforts. As announced last month and outlined in their proposed strategy, the CPSC will replace its manual coding process with an electronic data exchange through a Qualified Information Network. In the comment letter, the AHA urged the CPSC to limit data requests to only data necessary for NEISS’ injury tracking and surveillance purposes and to provide additional guidance on how the CPSC will ensure compliance with data security and privacy laws. The AHA also recommended the commission minimize added financial costs and administrative burden to the healthcare system by keeping hospital participation voluntary. In addition, the AHA recommended the CPSC pursue a notice-and-comment period for the updated NEISS system.
